Data show racial bias/White privilege

Data show racial bias presists in America- Salim Muwakkil

Muwakkil argues that in America life is harder for a person of color than the white man. However, I do believe this is true, but there is a quote that I would like to point out, "But a number of recent studies say that overt racial discrimination is still easy to find-if you know where to look." If you're looking for the problem you are obviously going to find it. If I was to take a poll of all people who wear pink shirts, I'd find what I was looking for but under certain circumstances. If someone who owns a pink shirt isn't wearing one that day, that could ruin my data. I just thik that if you "look" for the problem you're going to find one.

"That canard has trickled down into mainstream society, and many white Americans now believe that race no longer affects personal prospects of success or failure." I think that times have changed so much that people don't realize it exists so much. People other white do have the oppurtunity to have good jobs and some actually do. I think the racism exists in older generations because they experienced integration when it first came about and it was looked down upon.

"The study found the greatest disparity in Illinois, where blacks were jailed for selling or using drugs at 57 times the rate of whites. The report also found that blacks comprise 90 percent of the inmates imprisoned for drugs" Okay this quote its rediculous to me because down in Illinois there are more black people that live in the city, so of course the percentage of black crimes is going to be higher than whites. If you were in a city that had more white people than black people and the crime rate was high the white people would probably be a higher percentage because there is more of them!

Whether or not people believe it exits, racism does exist. Not just for blacks, many people face racism everyday. I don't know if it's ever going to end, but I think it will. This country has come a long way with accepting others.

White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack- Peggy McIntosh
Peggy McIntosh argues that white people are taught not to recognize white privilege so they don't really realize that they are privileged.
"White privilege is like an invisible weightless knapsack of speical provisions, maps. passports, code books, visas, clothes, tools and blank checks." This quote basically means that being white gives you the privilege to make money and buy nice things while others of color may not be as successful as you to get such nice things.

On the second page McIntosh has a list of 26 privileges that white people have. As I was reading the list it made me realize that I have more privileges than I thought. I don't think its truly that horrible like the 26th one about bandades...okay its just a bandaid! And also number 11 anyone is capable of protecting their children. If you know about self defense or for others, you are more than capapble of protecting your children.

This article just makes people who are not of color to step back and realize wow, I do have more privileges than I thought. Everyone is not the same, we are all different. At times I think how people interpret things than lead to something different than what the outcome was planned to be. We do have issues with white people having more privilege and its just that we need to step back and realize that.

Kate,
The first and second part of this post seem a little ironic to me. On the one hand, you seem to challenge Muwakkil's claims that there is any race based discrimination left in America. And then you clearly articulate McIntosh's claims that white people are often blind to their own privilege and the racial discrimination it engenders. Do you see any irony here? :)
